Located on the west coast of Phang Nga province, only 1 hour north of Phuket International Airport, this unique headland and beach springs up out of nowhere as you cross a rather flat stretch of rice paddies and gently undulating hills on your way north from Phuket. Diving Khao Laks close proximity to the Similan Islands guarantees its continuing popularity with liveaboard and day trip operators both from Phuket as well as Khao Lak. Boats depart from the local harbour at Thap Lamu.
Khao Lak is a fairly widespread region, stretching almost 35 km from Ban Lam Kaen & Thap Lamu in the south to the newly developed island of Kho Kho Khao in the north. Thap Lamu is the home port for many ships in the region, including the Royal Thai Navy and a large fishing fleet. Thap Lamu is also the gateway for all diving & snorkeling day boats as well as many liveaboards to the Similan Islands.
The center of Khao Lak region is the small village of Ban Bang La Ong, 15 km north from Tab Lamu harbour or just an hours drive north of Phuket Airport. The supply of accommodation in Khao Lak is rich and offers a wide range for every taste or budget, from a simple, clean lodge to the cozy small resort up to the international 5 star hotel.
Just 3 km north from Khao Lak center you find Ban Bang Niang. With the popular market, resorts and restaurants, Bang Niang has rapidly developed into a small center of it's own which slowly grows together with Ban Bang La Ong. Khuk-Khak Beach, Pakweep Beach and Bangsak Beach north from Ban Bang Niang offer several more upmarket resorts with hardly any infrastructure nearby. All in all Khao Lak is a good base for diving the beautiful Similan Islands.
